Sharp Aims to Cut Prices On HDTV DVD Players
The company will mass produce blue laser diodes for both formats.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 19, 2006) -- Here's good news for HDTV owners who think high-def DVD players cost too much. Sharp says it has started mass production of blue laser diodes for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats.

The increased volume of the diodes, which are used to read and write data on the high-def DVDs, should help electronics companies significantly lower prices on the players, perhaps as early as next year..

Sharp's decision is considered a vote of confidence for the new HDTV DVD industry which has struggled due to the high prices and a format war between the Sony-backed Blu-ray and the Toshiba-supported HD-DVD.

Sharp says it started to increase production of the diodes in November to 150,000 units a month, a spokesman told Reuters today. But it plans to increase the monthly production to 500,000 by the end of next year.

Blu-ray players now retail for about $999, although they can be purchased for less online and at some retail stores. HD-DVD players begin at $499, but they too can be found for less online and at retail.
