-- Here's good news for HDTV owners who think high-def
DVD players cost too much. Sharp says it has started
mass production of blue laser diodes for both HD-DVD and
Blu-ray formats.
The increased volume of the diodes, which are used to
read and write data on the high-def DVDs, should help
electronics companies significantly lower prices on the
players, perhaps as early as next year..
Sharp's decision is considered a vote of confidence for
the new HDTV DVD industry which has struggled due to the
high prices and a format war between the Sony-backed Blu-ray
and the Toshiba-supported HD-DVD.
