HDTV Review: Sharp's 56-Inch DLP Rear-Projection
Home Theater magazine says there's a "lot to like" about the rear-projection set.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 4, 2006) -- Home Theater magazine says you could easily confuse Sharp's 56-inch 56DR650 DLP rear-projection set for a flat-panel LCD.

"
In the space below the screen, speakers are hidden behind a plastic mesh," the magazine said in a recent review. "This, coupled with the elegant stand, helps make the 56DR650 one of the most attractive rear-projection sets I can remember."

The publication's reviewer also praises the set's high-def picture, but noted that the "color was a little rich but very watchable." He added the set delivered "plenty of detail (but) wasn't as sharp as other TVs I've seen."

The set, which has a suggested retail of $3,300, also displayed some video "noise" when playing a DVD.

"This noise was especially visible in chapter 5 of The Fifth Element," the review said. "While Bruce Willis' character was sitting on his bed rubbing his face, a strange shadow appeared along his jaw and neck. It looked like a quantization error."

However, the magazine's reviewer wrote that the "noise" issue could be eliminated by adjusting the brightness level.

"Although it requires careful setup (to avoid that weird shadow artifact in The Fifth Element), there is a lot to like about the Sharp 56DR650, not the least of which is its price," the publication concluded. "For an MSRP of $3,300, you get a 56-inch display with great processing and a decent contrast ratio (for an RPTV). This makes for a very watchable image. Add in a beautiful cabinet, and you've got one impressive TV that can hold its own with Sharp's stable of LCD and DLP displays."
