Fox Sports: Nats Pursuing John Smoltz

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (December 4, 2009) -- Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal is reporting this morning that the Washington Nationals are interested in signing free agent right-hander John Smoltz.

While Rosenthal terms a Nats-Smoltz deal a "long shot," he writes that "there is a mutual sincere interest" between the two parties, according to one source with knowledge of the situation.

That source is unnamed but it could be Nats President Stan Kasten, a former top Atlanta Braves executive with close ties to Smoltz who gained his fame and fortune as a Brave.

Nationals: They have the best prospect in the game in No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg, plus solid talents in catcher Derek Norris, right-hander Drew Storen and shortstop Danny Espinosa. Beyond that, though, the Nats have very little help, especially at the upper levels, which is a pity considering the state of the big-league roster.

Smoltz, a guarantee Hall of Fame inductee after his retirement, finished the 2009 season with the St. Louis Cardinals after a bumpy mid-summer debut with the Boston Red Sox. Rosenthal says the Cards remain his top choice.

Rosenthal writes that Smoltz would prefer to sign with a National League contender,  something the Nats can not realistically pretend to be. But the veteran pitcher could be persuaded to join the DC club to act as a mentor to the team's young pitching staff if he does not have better options.
