Sony to Launch High-Def Movie Channel

Washington, D.C. (July 6, 2010) -- Sony plans to launch a new  movie channel in High-Definition later this year, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The channel, tentatively called Sony Pictures Movies HD, would be devoted entirely to movies. But the newspaper reports that it would not compete with such premium channels as HBO, Showtime, Starz and the new Epix HD channel.

Instead, Sony would target the mid-level movie channel category which includes such networks as MGM HD and Universal HD. Consequently, Sony would charge a smaller carriage fee which would encourage more TV providers to carry the channel.

The Times' article does not say if any TV providers have agreed to carry the channel.

The newspaper writes that the channel, which is now scheduled to launch on October 1. will feature Sony's extensive library of films.

In addition, Sony, and partners Lionsgate and Comcast, plans to launch a horror channel called FearNet on October 1. The channel has been available as a Video on Demand service for some time.
