But is it worth your time and money?
In a new review, Home Theater Magazine says the Sony BDP-S300 is a "sure winner."
"If you want a relatively affordable standalone Blu-ray player, it's currently the only game in town. And fortunately, it's an outstanding one," the publication writes in the July issue.
Blu-ray is competing with HD DVD for the new high-def disc audience. While Blu-ray is leading in title sales and rentals, HD DVD supporters say more HD DVD standalone players have been sold to date. (The totals, however, do not include the Sony Play Station 3, which has a Blu-ray player inside.)
Sony hopes its new $499 Blu-ray player will appeal to high-def owners looking for an affordable entry into the HDTV player category. (Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player retails for $299.)
In the review, Home Theater says that once a Blu-ray disc is loaded (load times vary by disc, it says), "the BDP-S300 performed like a gold medalist. The best Blu-ray Discs looked sensational at either 1080p/60 or 1080p/24. And for those using 720p displays, or displays that will not accept 1080p inputs, the player also performed beautifully when set for either a 720p or 1080i output."
