Home Theater writes that the Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-ray discs look as good on the Sony Blu-ray as they did when projected digitally in the theaters.
"The black levels were pristine...the colors were rich and true, and the detail was often startling," the publication reports.
"In fact, I couldn't help but notice that the detail was good enough to show that some of the costumes were, obviously, costumes, and not genuine period clothing. You'd never notice this on a standard definition DVD and certainly not on most theatrical film presentations," the magazine's reviewer states.
Home Theater says the player also performed well in sound tests and does a "good" job of upconverting standard DVDs to near high-def quality.
On the down side, the publication reports that the player froze up on a few occasions after being given a new command, although not when a movie was actually playing. The magazine's reviewer said undoing the freeze up required ejecting the disc and reloading it.
The player also performed so-so when using the chapter skip button.
"Sometimes the player landed on the chapter I was aiming for; sometimes I had to make a correction or two. The faster your chapter-skip finger, the more likely you are to see this," the publication writes.
