HDTV Review: Sony's Top-Rated 40-Inch LCD
Both CNET and Consumer Reports give high marks to the flat-screen set.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 3, 2006) -- Consumer Reports says the set's High-Definition TV picture is one of the industry's 12 best. And CNET has given it an "Editor's Choice" award.

The set: Sony's 40-inch
KDL-40XBR2 LCD HDTV.

In a recent review, CNET says the flat-panel TV "reproduces deep blacks with excellent shadow detail; the picture stays true from off-angle compared to other LCDs; (and) it resolves every detail of 1080p resolution sources."

CNET gives the TV a score of 8.3 out of a possible 10.

The Sony set, which also has three HDMI inputs and a PC input, retails for around $2,700 but can be purchased for less at Amazon.com and other e-commerce sites.

In a recent Consumer Reports survey of 112 high-def sets, the KDL-40XBR2 was one of only 12 to get an "excellent" rating for its high-def picture.

"We expected very good things from the Sony KDL-40XBR2's picture quality at this price point,," CNET said in its review. "And for the most part we were satisfied. It delivered some of the deepest black levels we've seen yet in an LCD, fine color performance and yes, all of the detail that 1080p promises, albeit on a screen a bit too small to really do 1080p justice."

On the negative side, CNET notes that the TV is more expensive than most 40-inch LCD HDTVs and delivers a "subpar" picture for standard definition sources.
