Sony HDTV Downloads to Challenge Apple
Company planning big push into download business, says Wall Street Journal.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (September 4, 2007) -- Sony is planning to launch a video download service on its two video game systems to challenge Apple's dominance in the category.

That's according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.

The download service, which will be available on Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable video game systems, is expected to include both standard and High-Definition TV shows and movies.

In fact, WSJ quotes
Kurt Scherf, a Park Associates analyst, as saying that "the real key is going to be who is providing the best High-Definition experience for viewers." Scherf was referring to the likely battle between Sony and other download players, including Apple.

Apple offers video downloads from its iTunes store, including TV shows and movies. The programs can be watched on a computer, the company's 2.5-inch screen video iPod or via its new Apple TV set-top which can send video files from a PC to a TV.

But the Wall Street Journal notes that Apple may be ripe for a competitor, saying that Apple TV sales have been slow and that iTunes video downloads have "tapered off recently."

Apple currently does not offer high-def videos at the iTunes store.

The newspaper reports that Sony will allow viewers to download programs via the video game systems and watch them on High-Definition TVs. There is no word on when the service will launch; Sony refused to comment on WSJ's report, the newspaper said.

Sony will also be in competition with Microsoft's XBox 360 Live service that enables video game users to download standard and High-Definition programs and watch them on TV.
