That's according to an article by Reuters.
The high-def presentations, which will begin in August with Cirque du Soleil's music and dance spectacular, Delirium, will be shown in theaters specially equipped with digital equipment.
"Our mandate will be to identify the one-of-a-kind, and sold-out events that people around the country most want to see ... and present them to audiences everywhere," Sony said in a statement.
The company's new venture, called 'Hot Ticket,' will also present the final performance in the 12-year run of the Broadway hit, Rent, in September.
Reuters reports that the Sony HD presentations will target approximately 400-500 movie theaters across the country, with ticket prices around $20 each.
The concept of holding special HDTV events in movie theaters has been building steam in the last few years. The Metropolitan Opera has held live broadcasts of its productions in movie theaters for two seasons and select Boston Red Sox games have been available in Massachusetts-area theaters.
