Starz, which already has Starz HD, Starz Comedy HD, Starz Edge HD and Starz Kids & Family HD, did not say if any TV providers have agreed to carry the new Encore HD. The company, however, is owned by Liberty Media, the corporate parent of DIRECTV.
The new high-def movie channel, which will be a simulcast of its standard-def version, this year will offer such titles as Cars, Independence Day, The Guardian and Gone In Sixty Seconds.
Starz says the high-def audience is increasingly interested in watching movies at home.
"Consumer demand for HD movies, rising HDTV sales and continuing growth in Encore's 30+ million subscriber base make Encore HD an ideal choice for our next new High-Definition offering," said
Starz will provide an East Coast feed of Encore HD; Starz HD has both a West and East feed.
