Oklahoma Viewers Will Get Super Bowl In HD
An independent station agrees to turn off its signal for one day.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (February 1, 2008) -- Residents in northwest Oklahoma will be able to see Sunday's Super Bowl in High-Definition after all.

According to the Associated Press, the Federal Communications Commission recently allowed KOMI-TV, an independent station in Woodward, Oklahoma, to increase the power of its signal.

But KOMI's new signal strength meant that residents from the towns of Alva to Elk City could no longer see the digital/HD signal for KOKH-TV; they now see KOMI instead.

That wouldn't be such a big deal if KOKH wasn't the Fox affiliate in Oklahoma City. which will broadcast this Sunday's Super Bowl. The KOKH signal was the only Fox HD signal that residents in northwest Oklahoma could get.

But the Oklahoman reports this morning that KOMI has agreed to turn off its transmitter Sunday afternoon, allowing area viewers to see the game in high-def.

"We're going to do some repair work on our transmitter on Sunday afternoon following the Baptist Church service,” Doug Williams, KOMI's owner, told the newspaper. "That will allow them to pick up the (KOKH) HD signal.”

KOKH told the Associated Press earlier this week that it was petitioning the FCC for help because the agency had approved KOMI's request for a stronger signal. After consulting with the FCC, KOMI said it decided to do a little repair work on Sunday.

"The FCC does not have any rules and regulations governing the situation,” Williams said. "So they asked me if I would turn my station off during the Super Bowl for repairs.”

However, KOKH general manager John Rossi notes that it's a temporary fix.

"It still hasn't been resolved,” he told the Oklahoman. "It will be fine for Sunday so that people will get the digital broadcast of the game, which is great. The problem is, effective Feb. 17, 2009, everything is going to be on digital and those people (in northwest Oklahoma) aren't going to get the signal, period.”
