The early screening is HDNet's latest 'sneak peek' of a new movie before it opens in theaters. The network, which was co-founded by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, believes that the advance showings will ultimately generate more DVD sales, theatrical revenue and viewers for HDNet. (HDNet Movies and HDNet are sister channels.)
Surfwise recounts the inspirational tale of Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, a 51-year-old doctor, who decides to give up conventional life for a chance to become a full-time surfer. Problem is, Paskowitz had a wife and nine children -- and one 24-foot camper.
Now 85, Paskowitz and his wife Juliette home schooled their kids on the beaches of Southern California, Hawaii, and Mexico and were forced to live by a strict diet.
"It's set in the surfing world, but it's not a surf film," says the film's director. Doug Pray. "It's really about diet, sex, home schooling, fatherhood, breastfeeding, the holocaust, wild animals, 'the aloha spirit,' family, cults and surfing."
Surfwise will open in Los Angeles and New York theaters on May 9.
