That's according to an article in TV Week.
The publication reports that Mark Burnett, the executive producer of Survivor, says the network is concerned about the cost of upgrading the productions to high-def.
CBS says the reason is that it's concerned about using expensive, possibly less durable high-def cameras in the wild. (The shows are set in sometimes perilous situations such as jungle conditions.)
The network says the two explanations are not in conflict because the cost of replacing the cameras would drive up production expenses.
Burnett says he would be happy to film Survivor in high-def.
“If CBS wants me to do it, I’ll say yes,” Burnett told reporters at the recent Television Critics Association meeting in Pasadena, California.
Survivor is scheduled to return for its 15th season in September.
