Washington, D.C. (January 7, 2009) -- At this week's Consumer Electronics Show, JVC and Samsung are expected to unveil what each will call the world's thinnest LCD HDTV.
According to Wired.com, JVC will display a 32-inch LCD that measures only about .28 inches thick while Samsung will exhibit a LCD model that's even slightly thinner.
In past CES events, TV makers competed to see who could display the world's largest TV (Sharp last introduced a 150-inch model), but it appears that this week will be a test of thinness. In addition to the two LCDs, Sony and Samsung are expected to exhibit sets with the new OLED technology, enabling panels to be as thin as one-eighth of an inch.

Additionally, Samsung this week is expected to introduce a new Blu-ray player that measures just 1.5 inches thick.
Perhaps with the global recession, TV makers are issuing thin sets because they want to be in sync with consumers who are looking to tighten the belt.
Wired reports that JVC says it was able to manufacture a LCD set at .28 inches in depth by moving some of the components to a separate box and building a new optical light system.
PC World, however, reports that Samsung's LCD will get the title of the thinnest LCD at the show.
