TiVo: Cable HD DVR Coming Soon
The DVR company
invites customers to sign up at TiVo.com.
By Phillip Swann
Washington, D.C. (August 25, 2006) --
TiVo says it will soon release a 'standalone' HDTV Digital Video
Recorder for cable TV viewers.
The 'Series 3' HD DVR will be compatible with all major cable TV
providers. However, users will need to get a CableCard from
their local cable company.
The CableCard is a small card that slides into the back of the
TiVo receiver, enabling the set-top to receive the cable
signals. Two CableCards will be required if you want to record
two shows at the same time.
The FCC requires cable TV operators to provide CableCards upon
request, but some charge a small fee.

TiVo made the Series 3 announcement this week at the company's
web site, TiVo.com. On the site's home page, the company invites
people to sign up to get more information on the receiver when
it's launched.
The company did not reveal the receiver's retail price.
The Series 3 receiver, which will be available at retail and
online, will further TiVo's efforts to penetrate the cable TV
audience. Yesterday, TiVo announced that Cox Cable will offer
its recording service next year.
TiVo will customize its software so it will be compatible with
current Cox DVR set-tops. Cox subscribers will be able to
download the software, eliminating the need for a new set-top or
installation appointment.
David Grabert, a Cox spokesman, told TVPredictions.com that TiVo will be available on Cox's
High-Definition DVRs.
Cox is the second cable TV
operator to license TiVo's DVR
software. Comcast, the nation's
largest cable TV operator, is
scheduled to add TiVo later this
year.
TiVo, which has less than five
million subscribers after nearly
nine years in business, has been
aggressively seeking licensing
deals with both cable and
satellite operators.
