Toshiba: 3 Free HD-DVDs With Every Player
Offer begins next week and extends to February 28, 2006.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (October 26, 2006) --  Looking to boost sales of its struggling format, Toshiba today announced that it will bundle three free HD-DVDs with every Toshiba HD-DVD player.

The offer will begin on November 1 and extend to February 28, 2007. During that time, buyers of a Toshiba HD-DVD player (retail: $499; $799) will receive a mail-in form which can be redeemed for the free movies.

Sony and Microsoft have announced that it will include one free high-def disc with the Play Station 3 (Blu-ray player inside; Talladega Nights included) and the XBox 360 HD-DVD attachment ($199 for attachment; separate cost from XBox; King Kong HD-DVD included.)

But Toshiba is upping the ante by offering buyers three discs from three different studios.

Both the Sony-backed Blu-ray format and Toshiba's HD-DVD have struggled due to consumer concerns that they will pick the wrong format. The two HDTV DVDs are not compatible with each other, meaning one disc won't play on the other's machine.

Toshiba's "3 Free" offer includes the following movies:

Paramount:
Four Brothers
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

Universal
Apollo 13
The Chronicles of Riddick
The Rundown
Seabiscuit
U-571

Warner
Blazing Saddles
Casablanca
Constantine
The Dukes of Hazzard
The Perfect Storm

Buyers of the Toshiba HD-DVD player can choose any three from the list.
