That's the conclusion of a new review from CNET.com.
The technology web site says the player, which retails for $399 (but is cheaper online), also offers a "good" image when upscaling standard definition film-based DVDs.
CNET also notes that the set-top has an Ethernet jack for firmware upgrades sent via the Net and much faster load times than the first-generation Toshiba HD DVD player.
On the down side, the site notes the 1080p picture quality issues and the fact that HD DVD is embroiled in a high-def disc format war against Blu-ray, meaning many movies will not be available in HD DVD.
But overall, CNET gives the player a score of 7 out of a possible 10.
"The bottom line: The Toshiba HD-A20 is a perfectly competent HD DVD player, but it's not worth the extra money when compared to the budget Toshiba HD-A2," the review states.
The Toshiba HD-A2, which retails for $299 but is available for less online, does not display high-def video in 1080p.
