TCL Unveils Sub-$1,000 4K TV
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (July 28, 2013) - TCL has announced that it will begin selling a 50-inch 4K TV this September for $999.

While Seiki's 50-inch 4K TV has been priced under $1,000 at sites like, the set's suggested list price is $1,499. The TCL 50-inch set will be the first 4K TV of its size with a suggested list price under $1,000. (Seiki has introduced a 39-inch 4K set for $699.)

TCL, a Chinese-based TV maker, says it's now the third leading seller of TVs in the world. The company is following the Vizio strategy of offering acceptable quality sets for lower prices than more well-known companies.

"Our mission is to deliver high quality HDTVs with advanced technologies and premium design at an aggressive price to establish the TCL brand in the U.S." the company's press release states. "Similar to what the market saw a dozen years ago with the introduction of HDTVs, 4K TVs are priced so high today that most consumers cannot afford them. As one of the world's largest TV brands, TCL is able to change that, so we are launching our 50-inch 4K TV at a $999 MSRP..."

TCL says the LED 4K TV features 3840x 2160 resolution with SRS TruSurroundHD sound, four HDMI inputs and it will be MHL-enabled, meaning users can connect smart phones and tablets to the TV to display content.
