Mitsubishi Combines 4K TV With LaserVue
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (October 3, 2013) - For those skeptical of the new 4K TVs, Mitsubishi is adding a new twist that could intrigue some TV shoppers in the coming months.

Ubergizmo.com reports that Mitsubishi this week showcased a 65-inch, 4K TV at the CEATEC conference in Japan and the set comes with a red laser light source in the backlight, perhaps known as LaserVue technology.

Mitsubishi experimented with LaserVue sets a few years ago, but announced last year that it was discontinuing its production. While the sets promised more vivid colors because of its unique and more precise backlight source, they were very expensive and never caught on with the public.

However, it appears that Mitsubishi is bringing the LaserVue technology back to give the new 4K TVs some street cred. Some display experts have questioned whether the 4K TV, despite claims of offering four times the resolution of current 1080p HDTVs, really offer a dramatic picture improvement.

Ubergizmo.com quotes a Mitsubishi executive as saying that "many companies have already put 4K-compatible LCD televisions onto the market. However, we have made an effort to differentiate ourselves from other companies by developing a 4K television with high-color reproducibility achieved through a laser light source plus LED light sources as its backlighting."

The company did not say when the new sets would be available or how much they will cost. But if past LaserVue TVs are any guide, they will be expensive.
