Washington, D.C. (October 22, 2009) -- What would it take to get a consumer to upgrade his current TV?

A bigger screen, according to a NPD Group study, as reported by Home Media Magazine.

The research firm said 77 percent of poll respondents would only consider buying a new HDTV if its screen size was at least 40 inches. Twenty-five percent said the screen size had to be at least 50 inches.

Additionally, 71 percent of those surveyed said a higher resolution for the set was equally important.

The poll results suggest that sales of large-screen 1080p HDTVs could improve in the coming months. Thanks to the recession, in the past year, most consumers have opted to buy sets with smaller screens -- and smaller price tags.

“Demand for digital television remains strong months after the end of analog broadcasting,” said an NPD spokesman.
