Study: 'Ultra HD' In 40 Percent of Homes By 2025
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (November 23, 2009) -- High-Definition TV has just barely passed the 40 percent home penetration mark in the U.S., but a research firm is now saying the next generation of high-def TVs will be in 40 percent of North American homes by 2025.

InStat says 'Ultra TV,' which is expected to deliver four to 16 times the resolution of current HDTVs, will not begin to reach a mass audience for almost a decade. However, it says 40 percent of homes will have it by 2025.

Some analysts have questioned how swiftly the next picture format will spread here in the U.S. and across the globe. They note that millions of Americans have recently purchased regular high-def sets, which they count on keeping for years to come.

Additionally, there are no Ultra HDTVs currently for sale at retail and no programmer has announced plans to offer high-def content in the format.

Still, InStat says Ultra TV sets will reach about five percent of all homes in the next five to 10 years with programmers beginning to offer Ultra HD shows somewhere in the 2017-2022 period.

Swanni's Take:
No doubt, Ultra HD will someday become a force in the marketplace. Everything changes in technology and it's just a matter of time before consumers and industry officials embrace a better picture resolution.

However, with all due respect to the InStat folks, issuing a projection for the number of homes that will have Ultra HD 16 years from now is absolutely ridiculous. It's impossible to make an accurate (and precise) prediction for something that will occur in 16 years.

Hell, the Mayans don't even think we will all be around in 16 years.
