Universal Stays With HD DVD For Now
The studio announces the release of American Gangster in the high-def disc format.

While the film is an Oscar candidate, Universal's announcement would not be terribly newsworthy under normal circumstances.
However, since Warner's decision this month to back Blu-ray exclusively in the format war, there have been rumors that Universal will switch to Blu-ray as well.
So for now at least, the studio remains in the HD DVD camp.
"American Gangster kicks off the year in a big way as we release one of the most high-profile and celebrated titles of 2007 on HD DVD,” said Universal president Craig Kornblau.
Universal said American Gangster will be released in the combo disc of HD DVD/DVD, meaning one side can play in an HD DVD player while the other side can play in a standard-def DVD player.
The studio said the disc will also include several interactive features including picture-in-picture commentary and Web-based content.
American Gangster, which stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, is based on the real life story of a 1970s Harlem drug lord.
