Wal-Mart Rolls Back HDTV Prices
Retailer vows to offer lowest prices in town.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (November 6, 2006) -- Planning to buy a Plasma HDTV for the holidays? Chances are that you'll find the lowest price at Wal-Mart.

The retailing giant announced Friday that it was dramatically dropping the price on 100 different electronics products during the holiday season.

High-def bargains include a Panasonic 42-inch Plasma set for $1,294 (priced at more than $1,700 at most other retail stores); a Polaroid 37-inch LCD HDTV for $997 (close to $1,300 elsewhere); and a RCA 32-inch LCD HDTV for $847 (compared to about $1,000 elsewhere.)

Wal-Mart is also selling Toshiba's HD-DVD player for $448, about $50 less than suggested retail, and a Philips Blu-ray player for $898, about $100 less than suggested retail.

"Wal-Mart recognizes that Mom wants to get the perfect gift for the best value," said Gary Severson, a Wal-Mart senior vice president. "We've lowered prices so that families can afford to get and give more of the best brands and technology in electronics this season."

While
Wal-Mart can not match a Best Buy or Circuit City in total volume of high-def sets, the retailer is pushing pressure on the "big box" stores to lower holiday prices even further. Before year's end, you might see a $1,000 42-inch Plasma HDTV available at most leading electronics stores.
