Washington, D.C. (September 26, 2008) --
Warner Bros. is offering Academy Awards screeners an opportunity to see The Dark Knight on Blu-ray high-def disc, an Oscar first.
That's according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter.
Normally, studios issue watermarked standard-def DVDs so Academy members can review films prior to making their Oscar nominations. But Warner recently alerted members that a Blu-ray disc of The Dark Knight would be available for their consideration.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the move was encouraged by the film's director, Chris Nolan.
"We really tried to do a lot with the film technically to give audiences a real reason to go see the film in theaters," Nolan told the publication. "The Blu-ray version is vastly superior to DVD. You can actually see the things we did in Imax, and it will give Academy members the best possible chance to see what we did technically."
Perhaps to boost the film's Oscar chances even further, rumors persist that Warner will release The Dark Knight in stores on December 9. The film, which was released in theaters during the summer, was a blockbuster hit, grossing more than $500 million in the United States alone.
However, the Blu-ray release to Academy members comes with some dangers. First, it's more costly to replicate a Blu-ray disc and second it could increase the chances the discs will be copied and sold on the black market.
