Warner Bros to Release Dual HDTV DVD
The 'Total HD' disc will include both high-def formats.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 4, 2007) -- Warner Bros will soon launch a DVD that can play movies and TV shows on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD machines.

The disc, which comes on the heels of an announcement from LG Electronics that it will soon launch a dual HDTV DVD player, is intended to alleviate consumer concerns about the high-def DVD format war.

Many HDTV owners have been reluctant to purchase the new HDTV DVD players -- and discs -- because they are afraid that one format will soon be obsolete. The new formats are not compatible, meaning one disc won't play on the other's machine.

News.com reports that Warner Bros. will unveil the new dual DVD at next week's Consumer Electronics Show. The studio has dubbed the disc the 'Total HD.'

Barry M. Meyer, Warner Bros. chairman, said the studio decided to launch a dual disc because it appears that neither format is going away anytime soon.

"The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer," Meyer told News.com

Jeffrey L. Bewkes, Time Warner's president, opined that the 'Total HD' disc was more likely to succeed than LG's dual format player because it's less expensive.

However, it's unclear if the other studios will endorse the dual disc concept.
