Wednesday: Swanni's 10 Hottest Shows In HDTV!

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (July 1, 2009) -- High-Definition TVs are now in more than 30 million U.S. homes and there are scores of high-def programming choices.

But which shows should you watch? And why?

Every day here at TVPredictions.com, I scan the HD programming aisles and serve up 10 programs so good -- so hot! -- that you can't miss them. Sports, movies, primetime comedies and drama -- they're all there and in beautiful high-def.

We call this list, "The Hottest Shows in HDTV!" And here they are for Wednesday, July 1, 2009: (All times Eastern -- and don't forget the link below to today's 'HD Hottie -- in fact, today there are 5 of them!

1. Tennis: Wimbledon
Men's quarterfinals.
See our 'HD Hottie' profile of Maria Sharapova.
NBC, 10 a.m.

Bonus Pick:
Taken
Liam Neeson stars as an ex-government operative who's forced back into the field when his daughter is kidnapped in Paris. Maggie Grace plays the obligatory hot daughter while Famke Janssen is almost unrecognizable as Liam's bitchy ex-wife. Despite Neeson's advancing years (he's 57 now), his early days as an amateur boxer serves him well here and the action is fast paced. Good movie.
See our 'HD Hottie' profile of Maggie Grace

Cable and satellite HD VOD, various times.

2. MLB Baseball
Giants at Cards.

ESPN, 8 p.m.

3. Wipeout (new)
ABC's quest to prove it can be just as trashy as Jeff Zucker's NBC continues tonight with its latest game show in which contestants are smacked, bopped and slammed into various bodies of water. Tonight the activity games include Spike Fenders (that's a contest; not a music video director); Spinning Triangles and Drop Bridge.
ABC, 8 p.m.

4. The Ultimate Trailer Show (new)
Texas-based film critic Robert Wilonsky tonight reviews trailers for the upcoming films, The Final Destination (Krista Allen) and Pandorum  (Ben Foster, Dennis Quaid.)
HDNet, 8 p.m.

5. I Survived a Japanese Game Show (new)
Oh, the fun is just beginning on the Big Mouse Network. Here, contestants must adapt to the Japanese culture while performing ultra-sadistic tasks at their expense. (Sort of like an average trip to Tokyo by a U.S.-based Sony employee.) Tonight's activities include
trying to get small balls into bins while you're chased by people with foam hammers; moving milk from containers on conveyor belts into a waiting receptacle while wearing vision-impairing goggles. Jeff Zucker, eat your heart out!
ABC, 9 p.m.

6. Jaws
Steven Spielberg's classic big fish story comes to life again in this high-def remastering. Great performances from Roy Schneider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw.

HBO 2, 10 p.m.

7. True Blood
Anna Paquin is back as Sookie, a psychic waitress who falls under the spell of a 173-year-old vampire; the chick digs older guys, I guess. And I do mean, 'digs.' The vampire series is from Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball. Tonight, the program descript says Sookie is attacked by a mysterious creature. More mysterious than a 173-year-old vampire? (Evan Rachel Wood joins the cast this year as a 500-year-old vampire queen; 500-year-old vampire queen? Big deal; you could find one of those in the Village.)
See our 'HD Hottie' profile of Anna Paquin.
See our 'HD Hottie' profile of Evan Rachel Wood.
HBO, 10 p.m.

Bonus Pick:
Good Luck Chuck
Dane Cook stars as a dentist who must overcome a curse that causes his ex-girlfriends to find true love with their next boyfriend. Jessica Alba plays his obligatory hot new love interest who, something tells me, is a real curse breaker.
See our 'HD Hottie' profile of Jessica Alba.

Showtime, 10 p.m.

8. The Philanthropist (new)
James Purefoy (Marc Antony in HBO's Rome) stars as Teddy, a successful tycoon (are there any other kind?) who decides to use his money to help people in need. You know, sort of like President Obama -- except the president uses our money. Tonight, Teddy seeks advice from a Burmese politician who's been under house arrest for two years. See, just like Obama!
NBC, 10 p.m.

9. Late Night With David Letterman
Tonight's guests include Denzel Washington who will wander by to hawk his new film, Pelham 123.
CBS, 11:35 p.m.

10. The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien
Tonight's guests include
Eddie Murphy who will wander by to hawk his new film, Imagine That.

NBC, 11:35 p.m.
