Showtime announced yesterday that its controversial series Weeds will end
after eight seasons.
The show, which starred Mary Louise Parker and featured a family
of pot sellers, premiered in 2005 and along with the serial
killer drama Dexter helped Showtime remain competitive with
rival HBO for the last several seasons.
However, Weeds' ratings have been on the decline and its seventh
season finale was viewed by just 556,000 people
"Weeds’
has been a seminal series for Showtime and was key in
establishing the network as a home for great original
programming,” Showtime entertainment chief David Nevins said
yesterday in a company statement. “It has had a groundbreaking
run, and will be one of the longest-running comedies in the
history of cable.
The final season of Weeds will begin July 1 at 10 p.m. on
Showtime. ____________________________________________________________________________
