Why Is Target Selling a 40-inch HDTV For $298?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (November 14, 2010) -- Since the Black Friday ads began leaking out a week ago, few 'doorbuster' deals have received more buzz than Target's posting of a 40-inch Westinghouse 1080p LCD HDTV for $298.

Retailers traditionally offer deep discounts on the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), better known as Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. But the price for the Westinghouse flat-screen is roughly $250 less than the regular price. (Amazon.com and Target now carry the set for $549.99.)

Additionally, most 40-inch, 1080p LCD HDTVs cost more than the regular price for the Westinghouse set, model

Westinghouse's soon-to-be $298 40" HDTV.

Best Buy's posting of a $59 Toshiba Blu-ray player has gotten some attention as has other retailers deals. But few consumers thought they would be able to buy a 40-inch 1080p HDTV for less than $300 this holiday season.

Clearly, Target is trying to make a statement to woo recession-weary shoppers -- and  Westinghouse, which has yet to make much of a dent in the TV category, appears to be as well.

So, what's the deal with this set?

Well, it's a relatively new product. Amazon.com doesn't even have a consumer review posted at its site; it says the set has been available since October 31, 2010.

(One review at Target.com gives it five stars out of five. "I
just picked up this TV and couldn't be happier. This is the perfect TV for the living room. The picture is great and you can't beat the price. I have tested viewing the TV from several angles and have had no problems." However, one review is hardly a consensus, or arguably, even an objective viewpoint.)

The flat-screen TV has a
60 Hz screen refresh rate, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, 8ms Response Time, three HDMI inputs and it's wall mountable.

Nothing spectacular there, but the price certainly is.
