Well, seven leading electronics companies are teaming to develop a new wireless technology that can send high-def signals to your set without a single cord.
That is, except for the power cord.
The Associated Press reports that the seven companies are scheduled today to announce they have created the WirelessHD Consortium. The group will be dedicated to developing products and technologies designed to eliminate unsightly cables and wires from the living room.
"In the last few years, the number of digital devices has really just amplified, and consumers are looking for a way to simply manage this A-V network," said John Marshall, the group's chairman. "This can get rid of both the spaghetti in the front and back of the television."
According to the AP, the wireless HDTV is not likely to be ready until 2008.
The companies backing the project are: LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita, NEC Corp., Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and SiBEAM, a wireless technology start-up.
AP writes that the wireless technology is expected to operate within a range of 32 feet if used in the same room. Wireless high-def images are supposed to be the same quality as video transmitted via wires.
The WirelessHD hopes to install the technology directly into high-def sets and related equipment, such as camcorders and audio/video products.
Marshall said adapters will allow viewers with older devices to use the wireless technology.
